Emirates Steel to create Bachelor’s Degree in metallurgy in collaboration with Abu Dhabi University

    November 16, 2019

The two Abu Dhabi based entities signed an MoU introducing new courses and research programs.

The MoU also enables Abu Dhabi University students to visit Emirates Steel’s plant and take part in its recruitment programs.

Abu Dhabi, UAE – 16 November 2019: Emirates Steel, the only integrated steel plant in the UAE and a subsidiary of the General Holding Corporation (SENAAT), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi University (ADU), to develop courses and research on the metals and steel sector. The MoU will see collaboration on the development of a Bachelor’s programme in metallurgy, alongside on-job training at Emirates Steel, and is designed to further the future of the national metals industry.

The MoU, which will be in effect for three academic years, was signed between the CEO of Emirates Steel, Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, and the Chancellor of ADU, Professor Waqar Ahmad. The agreement will see the two entities collaborate on the development of a Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, alongside Emirates Steel providing support for research grants into metallurgic studies at ADU.

Commenting on the MoU, Eng. Al Remeithi, said: “Building talent in the national metals sector is one of the best investments our company can make toward the future of the UAE’s non-oil heavy industry and our country’s economic diversification and long-term prosperity. While as a company, we have initiated a variety of programs to work with students, this MoU signed with Abu Dhabi University highlights our commitment to their future, and the wider longevity of the sector.”

“We welcome the creation of a Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering at ADU, alongside the research into the steel and metals sector which will be undertaken under this MoU. We also look forward to welcoming students from ADU to our headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and having the opportunity to show them the size and scale of our world-class operations and infrastructure. I will enjoy meeting students from ADU, and discussing with them the future of the steel sector in the UAE,” he concluded.

Professor Waqar Ahmad, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University commented, “This partnership between ADU, a leading national university in the UAE, and Emirates Steel, a leading company and the only integrated steel plant in the UAE, will undoubtedly open doors to a fruitful collaboration in the areas of applied research, training programs, and knowledge transfer. We also keenly look forward to support the metals industry in the UAE as well as the development of scientific research programs for ADU. This will result in invaluable exchange of expertise relevant to the national economy, while also creating new opportunities for our students to acquire more hands-on experience and transferrable skills that will prepare them for a career in related fields.”

Mr. Jasem Al Khateri, Vice President of Human Capital and Services at Emirates Steel, said: “We are delighted to be working with Abu Dhabi University to design and implement educational programs that will cater to the unique requirements of the steel and metal industries. We look forward to working closely with them to providing ADU students with opportunities to further develop their skills and expertise in the steel industry.”

Emirates Steel will also sponsor students at ADU through the creation of a scholarship program, as well as welcoming ADU students to tour Emirates Steel’s facilities at the company’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Distinguished students will also be given further training at Emirates Steel and be automatically enrolled in the steel manufacturer’s recruitment programs. Emirates Steel will also collaborate in the provision of technical training through the Abu Dhabi Knowledge Group, the learning, development and consulting arm of ADU.

Emirates Steel already has a scholarship program in place for students studying at a range of UAE based institutions, alongside working with a range of different universities and higher education facilities to ensure practical training on the steel industry. The MoU signed with ADU underlines Emirates Steel’s commitment to investing in the UAE’s talented future generations.
