Decarbonization Strategy
EMSTEEL is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. We will do this by implementing energy-efficient technologies, promoting the use of clean energy sources, and continuously monitoring and reporting emissions.
EMSTEEL has developed a comprehensive decarbonization strategy set in 2024, targets a 40% reduction in GHG emissions in our Steel Business and a 30% reduction in our Cement Business by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year, and aiming at net zero by 2050. This strategy underscores EMSTEEL’s leadership in sustainable manufacturing and its alignment with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative and the Paris Agreement.
To achieve significant CO2 footprint reduction as per our decarbonisation strategy, we will continue focusing on implementing key decarbonisation strategies, including enhancing our energy efficiency, as well as incorporating advanced process optimisation technologies and alternative fuels and raw materials in steel and cement production. We will also accelerate the use of clean and renewable energy, to cover 100% of electricity demand by 2030. In the longer term, we also plan to extend our existing carbon capture capabilities to further mitigate emissions from steel and cement production, while fuel switching initiatives will transition operations toward green hydrogen and alternative fuels.
Climate Change (Decarbonization)
Hydrogen Electrolysers

EMSTEEL and Masdar partnership on the green hydrogen pilot project launched a year ago with 2.1MW capacity to produce 40 Kg/hr, and with the ambitious goal of producing green steel and reducing the carbon footprint of the steel industry. The project successfully demonstrated the viability of using green hydrogen—a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels—in steel production. Situated in Abu Dhabi, this first-of-its-kind pilot in the Middle East and North Africa region showcases how green hydrogen can be effectively applied to extract iron from iron ore, a core step in steelmaking.
Certified by Avance Labs and validated by Bureau Veritas, the project meets global standards for green hydrogen, providing assurance of its environmental impact. This achievement aligns closely with the UAE's vision of becoming a key hub for green steel and hydrogen production, reinforcing the nation’s Net Zero by 2050 strategy.
Carbon Capturing
As part of our long-term strategy and investment in decarbonization, we partnered with ADNOC in which its Al Reyadah Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) facility processes the CO2 captured from our DRP operations to ultimately enhance its oil recovery. It has capacity to accumulate up to 800 kt of CO2 per year and pipe it to ADNOC’s Rumaitha and Bab oil fields to support oil extraction.
Clean Energy
EMSTEEL is committed to advancing clean energy by improving energy performance through the adoption of renewable energy sources.
